Tungi the spirit
To connoisseurs of unique spirits, Tungi (pronounced Toon-jee) has been the discerning drinker’s best-kept secret since 1857. It is produced in a limited annual quantity only by one tiny family distillery on the most isolated and inaccessible island in the world,
St Helena in the South Atlantic Ocean. Tungi has finally made its entrance into the international marketplace 150 years after local St Helenians first combined with bored British garrison soldiers in this rugged Colonial outpost to distill prickly pear spirit from sweet cactus fruits, for trade with sailing ships which called for supplies from this ‘nautical service station’ in the middle of nowhere.
Tungi is the local name for prickly or cactus pears, which grow wild and organically in the dry coastal regions of the island. Tungi spirit is authentically hand-distilled and is extremely high-quality, rare, and distinctive in taste and style. Infinitely smoother than any tequila, less boring than any vodka, Tungi has its own fruity nose and a distinctive ‘double ripple’ on the palate, several seconds apart.
Simply like nothing else, Tungi will suit shot-drinkers and more complex cocktail aficionados alike. Bottled in the drinks industry’s most unique container the Tungi Stairs Flask, a representation of St Helena Island’s famous Jacobs Ladder landmark. The ‘Ladder’ is the world’s longest straight staircase, rising over 1000ft up a sheer cliff above the distillery.

White Lion Rum from St Helena takes its name from the island's most celebrated sunken treasure shipwreck, the Dutch vessel Witte Leeuw which sunk in James Bay in 1613 following a brief but spectacular naval action with the Portuguese.
The White Lion had been carrying a cargo of several tons of peppercorns, nutmeg and cloves as well as diamonds and large quantities of Chinese Ming porcelain. When an international salvage team found the wreck in 1976, it transpired that the huge volume of peppercorns had survived more than 350 years under water, and the dense six foot layer of soggy spices had helped to preserve much of the Ming pottery intact. The White Lion was armed with a complement of 30 bronze canons, one of which is permanently displayed in the St Helena Museum. Most of the rare Chinese porcelain and other artifacts are on show in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
White Lion spiced rum is an authentic homage to the favoured liquor of the Seventeenth Century sailors who first experimented with combining pure white rum with exotic Oriental spices.

The process involves the combining of island-grown coffee, handpicked from the steep-sided slopes of this rocky but fertile British territory, with premium quality locally-produced spirit from the St Helena Distillery. The blend is then sweetened and balanced for alcoholic content to give a consistent and distinctive taste and aroma.
This original liqueur was developed exclusively on St Helena using green-tipped bourbon Arabica coffee grown with seed originally brought from the Yemen in 1773. First cultivated on the misty slopes at Sandy Bay, this connoisseur's coffee is now grown extensively on the island. For Midnight Mist the beans are deeply dark roasted and percolated before being blended with St Helena Rum to give a unique and satisfying coffee liqueur experience.
